Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a condition caused by compression of the median nerve in the wrist as a result of swelling or inflammation of the surrounding tendons. Carpal tunnel release surgery is a procedure aimed at relieving the pressure on the nerve and thus the associated symptoms.

Carpal tunnel release surgery is a minimally invasive surgery usually carried out under local anaesthetic with the option of having a mild sedation (to be confirmed with your consultant). The procedure involves making a very small incision in the wrist, followed by a small cut to the ligament at the top of the carpal tunnel. This releases the pressure being placed on the median nerve. The consultant will then stitch up the cut in your wrist.
The procedure usually takes around 20 minutes.
