Surgery to increase the size, fullness, and enhance the shape or create more symmetry of the breasts.
Breast augmentation, also known as breast enlargement surgery, is a common cosmetic surgical procedure that uses breast implants or fat transfer to increase the size, fullness, and enhance the shape or create more symmetry of the breasts.
Being unhappy with the size and shape of your breasts can have a significant impact on self-confidence and body image and therefore a breast augmentation is often advised to address one or more of the following concerns:
ANEASTHESIA – A breast augmentation is commonly performed under general anaesthesia, but there is also an option of IV sedation.
INCISION – Several approaches can be used to carry out a breast augmentation. The chosen method will be agreed on prior to the procedure and will be based on the desired outcome. The surgeon will make an incision using one of the following approaches:
IMPLANT INSERTION – The placement of the breast implants depends on the type of implant and how much enhancement is required. There are two methods of implant insertion:
WOUND CLOSURE – Once the implant has been positioned as agreed, the surgeon will then close the incision with a dissolvable suture. The surgeon may also attach a drain to remove excess fluid or blood.
WOUND DRESSING – The wound will be covered with a dressing and the breasts will be wrapped with a supportive bandage or surgical bra (as per the surgeon’s preference). The drain will be removed prior to going home.
PROCEDURE TIME – Approximately 60 to 90 minutes.
