Crohn’s and Colitis Awareness Week

The 1st of December marks Crohn’s and Colitis Awareness Week, a chance to reflect on the difference we can make together – from those living with Crohn’s and Colitis or supporting loved ones, to doctors, nurses, researchers and employers. This week, Crohn’s and Colitis UK are encouraging people to share their stories – recognising the importance of raising awareness and sharing information.

What are Crohn’s and Colitis?

Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis are the two main forms of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

Crohn’s Disease causes inflammation of the digestive system, affecting the body’s ability to digest food, absorb nutrients and eliminate waste in a healthy way and can cause redness, swelling and pain. It is referred to as a chronic condition meaning it is life-long and at present there is no cure. Individuals diagnosed with Crohn’s may have periods of flare ups when symptoms are more prominent, as well as having periods of good health.

Ulcerative Colitis causes inflammation and ulceration of the inner lining of the colon and the rectum. Ulcers develop on the surface of the bowel lining which may bleed and produce mucus. Ulcerative colitis can also cause redness, swelling and pain.
