Surgery to remove excess fat, muscle and skin from the upper and lower eyelids to give a more youthful and bright-eyed appearance.
Blepharoplasty, also known as eyebag removal/eyelid surgery, is a common cosmetic procedure that involves the removal of excess fat, muscle and skin from the upper and lower eyelids to give a more youthful and bright-eyed appearance.
Early signs of ageing and sun damage tend to affect the fragile skin around the eye long before other facial areas become affected. Severely sagging skin around the eyes can reduce side vision (peripheral vision), especially the upper and outer parts of the visual field. Blepharoplasty can reduce or get rid of vision problems and is therefore often advised for men and women who are experiencing one or more of the following:
ANAESTHESIA – Upper, Lower and Bilateral Blepharoplasty can all be carried out under local or general anaesthesia.
INCISION – For Upper Blepharoplasty, the surgeon will make an incision in the natural lines and creases in the upper lid or along the fold of the eyelid. For Lower Blepharoplasty, the incision will be made just below the lashes in your eye’s natural crease or inside the lower lid, so the scar runs along the eye’s natural folds.
PROCEDURE – During an Upper Blepharoplasty, the surgeon will remove a narrow crescent shaped portion of skin, excess muscles and possible fat from the middle of the lid. During a Lower Blepharoplasty, the surgeon will remove or redistribute excess fat, muscle and sagging skin. If only fat is being removed, the skin incision may be made inside the lower eyelid, leaving no visible scar. Once excess skin and/or fat has been removed, the remaining skin is stretched to create an overall smoother appearance.
WOUND CLOSURE – The incision is usually closed with fine dissolvable stitches
WOUND DRESSING – The incision will be covered with steri-strips and an eye pad
PROCEDURE TIME – Approximately 1 to 2 hours
