A circumcision is a relatively simple procedure and is performed under either general or local anaesthetic. The surgeon will use scissors or a scalpel to trim the narrow sleeve of the foreskin and detach it from the head of the penis. Any exposed blood vessels will then be sealed off with cauterisation and the remaining two edges of skin will be stitched together with dissolvable stitches.
The procedure usually takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour.
