Varicose Vein Treatment, also known as Endovenous Laser Ablation, is a minimally invasive surgical procedure to alleviate the symptoms of varicose veins. An experienced surgeon will insert a catheter into the vein and apply laser heat energy to close it off and prevent blood flow.
Endovenous Laser Ablation may be advised for aesthetic reasons or if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms:
Endovenous Laser Ablation is a minimally invasive procedure performed under local anaesthetic. Before and during the procedure the vein will be monitored via ultrasound imagery.
The surgeon will make a small cut or incision in the skin through which a catheter is passed and inserted into the varicose vein. A laser fibre will then be passed through the catheter into the vein. As the catheter is slowly removed, the laser fibre will heat up the length of the vein causing it to close up and shrink.
The cut where the catheter was inserted will likely be small enough that you won’t need stitches. A bandage will be put on the site and your surgeon may recommend using support stocking for recovery.
The procedure takes roughly 45 -90 minutes to perform depending on the number of veins being treated.
