Steroid injection used to diagnose or treat symptoms of the lower back pain
Facet joints are responsible for linking the bones of the back together and providing stability to the spine. A facet joint injection is a steroid injection used to diagnose or treat symptoms of the lower back caused by deterioration or damage to these joints.
A facet joint is often advised when experiencing any of the following symptoms:
A facet injection can also be used to diagnose or treat conditions such as:
Whilst lying on your stomach, the consultant will inject a local anaesthetic into the area of the skin surrounding the injection site. This will numb the lower back in preparation for the steroid injection. Guided by live x-ray images (fluoroscopy), enhanced by a contrast/dye injected into the back, the consultant will be able to identify the source of pain. You will then feel some pressure as the consultant injects the steroid solution into the painful facet joint. The steroid will reduce swelling, inflammation and relieve pain in the short term, enabling the process of physiotherapy to build strength for more long-term improvement.
The procedure usually takes less than 30 to 45 minutes, depending on how many joints are being treated.
