Surgical procedure to remove and replace the hip joint with a prosthesis.
The hip is a ball and socket joint, formed by the upper part of your thigh bone (the femur) sitting inside the socket-like part of your pelvis (acetabulum). In a total hip replacement (also known as a total hip arthroplasty), the head of the thighbone (femoral head) and the damaged socket are both removed and replaced with a metal, plastic, or ceramic prosthetic components.
At OSD Healthcare, this is performed as a day case procedure enabling you to recover in the comfort and convenience of your own home directly after your surgery.
When alternative methods of pain relief, such as physiotherapy, steroid injections and medication, have proven unsuccessful, a hip replacement is often advised to treat conditions such as:
Hip replacement surgery is usually performed under general anaesthetic or spinal block. The surgeon will make an incision on the hip and move the muscles connected to the top of the thigh bone to expose the hip joint. The damaged ball portion of the joint is then removed, and the artificial joint is either cemented or pressed into place.
The surgeon will then prepare the surface of the hip bone by removing any damaged cartilage before attaching the replacement socket prothesis to the hip bone. The new ball part of the thigh bone is then inserted into the socket part of the hip. A spacer (also called a liner) is inserted between the new ball and the socket to allow for a smooth gliding surface. Lastly, the muscles are reattached, and the incision closed.
The whole procedure takes approximately 1.5 hours.
