Knee ligament repair is a form of reconstructive surgery that uses a graft to repair the damage caused by an injury.
Knee ligament repair surgery is often advised when experiencing any of the following symptoms:
Knee ligament repair surgery is carried out under general anaesthetic. The surgeon will make a number of small incisions around the knee allowing a narrow, flexible, telescopic camera (arthroscope) to pass into the knee joint. Specialised surgical instruments will then be inserted into the remaining holes.
The torn ligaments are either reattached or alternatively reconstructed using a graft from another part of the knee, a donor or made from a synthetic material. The graft is then shaped and attached to the bones using surgical staples or screws, allowing bone to eventually grow around the graft. The incisions are then closed with stitches or surgical staples.
The procedure usually takes 1½ to 2 hours.
