Ganglion excision surgery is a minor surgical procedure involving the removal of a fluid-filled, non-cancerous cyst commonly found on the fingers, hand and wrist.
Ganglion excision surgery is often advised when experiencing any of the following symptoms:
Surgery to remove a ganglion cyst is usually performed under local anaesthetic. However, it can be performed under general anaesthetic after discussion with your consultant. Depending on the location of the cyst, removal can be achieved through either of the following surgical techniques:
Open surgery
The surgeon will make an incision over the cyst and separate it from the surrounding tendons, nerves and blood vessels. The cyst is then removed entirely before closing the cut with stitches.
Closed surgery
A number of small incisions are made around the site of the cyst. A narrow, flexible, telescopic camera (arthroscope) is then guided through one of the incisions, while specialised surgical instruments are passed through the remaining holes. The cyst is then removed entirely before stitching up the incisions.
The procedure usually takes 30 to 45 minutes.
