The Achilles tendon is the largest in the body, connecting the muscles of the calf to the heel bone. Achilles tendon repair surgery is aimed at repairing a tear or rupture in this tendon.
Achilles tendon repair surgery is often advised when experiencing any of the following symptoms:
Surgery to repair a ruptured Achilles tendon is performed under general anaesthetic and usually involves reattaching the two ends of the tendon back together. There are different surgical options for repairing a ruptured Achilles tendon depending on the location of the tear.
Open surgery
One incision is made through the skin and muscles of the calf enabling the surgeon a clear view and direct access to the tendon. The surgeon will then either remove parts of the damaged tendon or simply repair the tear by stitching the two ends back together.
Closed surgery
A number of small incisions are made around the site of the rupture. A narrow, flexible, telescopic camera, together with a series of needles and sutures will be used to indirectly stitch the tendon back together through the skin.
The procedure usually takes 1 hour to 90 minutes.
