Invisalign is a quick, effective and affordable orthodontic treatment that can be used to treat mild-to-complex tooth misalignments.
Invisalign straightens teeth using a series of clear custom-made aligners. It can be used for many different types of tooth malfunction including crowding, spacing, crossbites, overbites and underbites. The treatment is usually completed in a shorter time frame than ordinary fixed braces and is also more comfortable and discrete.
During the initial, comprehensive consultation with the specialist orthodontist, detailed measurements will be recorded to assess treatment suitability. A dental x-ray may be required to complete the full diagnosis.
The next stage will involve the specialist orthodontist taking a series of teeth moulds/impressions which are sent to the Invisalign laboratory to construct the custom-made aligners.
At the fitting appointment, you will be provided with the first set of aligners which should be worn for one-to-two weeks before you will change to the next set. It is important to move teeth at a slow and gentle pace to avoid any complications.
To create space during treatment, the specialist orthodontist may use a technique called interproximal reduction to carefully remove a fraction of a millimetre from your tooth enamel.
The Invisalign treatment is generally pain free, but you may notice slight tenderness when you change to the next set of aligners; this is temporary and should subside within a few days.
On completion of the Invisalign treatment, the specialist orthodontist will provide you with two sets of retainers. A fixed retainer which consists of a thin wire attached behind your teeth, and a removable retainer similar to a clear aligner. Retainers need to be worn for life to prevent teeth moving back to the original alignment.
