The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is one of two main ligaments in the knee that connect the thighbone (femur) to the shinbone (tibia). Anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction is a procedure aimed at replacing this torn ligament which is vital for providing stability and protection to the knee.
ACL reconstruction is often advised when experiencing any of the following symptoms:
ACL reconstruction surgery is carried out under general anaesthetic. The surgeon will make a number of small incisions around the knee allowing a narrow, flexible, telescopic camera (arthroscope) to pass into the knee joint. Specialised surgical instruments will then be inserted into the remaining holes, allowing the surgeon to remove the damaged ligament.
The torn ACL with then be replaced with a segment of tendon, called a graft, which is usually taken from the hamstring. Sockets or holes will then be drilled into the thighbone and shinbone to enable the surgeon to accurately position and attach the graft using screws. New ligament tissue will grow onto the graft therefore restoring stability to the knee.
The procedure usually takes around 2 hours.
