GASTROENTEROLOGY PROCEDURES

A colonoscopy is a diagnostic procedure that involves the examination of the lining of bowel to determine the cause of underlying bowel symptoms. An experienced consultant gently passes a narrow, flexible, telescopic camera, known as a colonoscope, into the colon via the anus.

A colonoscopy is often advised when experiencing any of the following symptoms:

  • Bleeding from the rectum or blood in the stools
  • Abdominal pain
  • Persistent diarrhoea or constipation
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Any of the above symptoms in combination with a raised temperature, feeling generally unwell, feeling or being sick and extreme fatigue.

An OGD (oesophago-gastroduodenoscopy, also known as a ‘gastroscopy’) is a minimally invasive procedure that is performed specifically to examine the inside lining of the oesophagus (food pipe), the stomach and the first part of the small intestine (duodenum). A narrow, flexible, telescopic camera, called a gastroscope, is passed through the upper digestive system.

A gastroscopy is often advised when experiencing any of the following symptoms:

  • Recurring heartburn
  • Difficulty swallowing (dysphagia)
  • Upper abdominal pain
  • Frequent vomiting (with or without blood)
  • Recurring indigestion
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Chest pain

A flexible sigmoidoscopy is a procedure that involves the examination of the rectum and lower part of the large intestine (colon/bowel). A narrow, flexible, telescopic camera, known as a sigmoidoscope, is passed through the anus into the colon.

Capsule endoscopy is a diagnostic procedure that involves the examination of the gastrointestinal tract using an ingestible pill-size capsule. The capsule is equipped with a light source, batteries, a radio transmitter, and antenna and slowly passes through the body once swallowed.

A capsule endoscopy is often advised when experiencing any of the following symptoms:

  • Heartburn and reflux
  • Indigestion
  • Bloating and distension
  • Abdominal discomfort
  • Altered bowel habits
