In the early stages of prostate cancer, there may not be any obvious symptoms so a screening appointment can be a good way of picking up abnormalities. We offer prostate screening as part of our men’s health screening programme.

FAQs

Before the appointment, you will be sent a questionnaire and detailed information about your appointment.

The prostate screening:

  • The GP will gently insert their finger into your anus (back passage) to check the size of your prostate gland. This is known as a digital rectal examination (DRE).
  • A urine sample will be taken and analysed.
  • Your height, weight and blood pressure measurements will also be taken.
  • A blood test may also be carried out to measure your prostate specific antigen (PSA). This involves taking a blood sample from a vein in your arm using a needle and syringe. If you are anxious about having a blood test, please let your GP know and we will take steps to ensure that you are comfortable.
