The specialist periodontist will use cleaning, scaling and root planing techniques to remove plaque, calculus, rough cementum and diseased tissue from the surrounding tooth and root surface. This procedure helps gum tissue to heal and the periodontal pocket to reduce.

If the disease is advanced, periodontal surgery may be required. Both treatments are usually performed using local anaesthetic.

The initial consultation with the specialist periodontist involves recording in-depth measurements of the gums and existing pockets to establish the level of disease present.

Stage one:
Scaling and root planing using an ultrasonic scaler and hand instruments to remove calculus, rough cementum and diseased tissues under local anaesthetic.

Stage two:
Periodontal review involving repetition of the gum pocket measurements to assess the level of pocket healing and periodontal health.

If the disease is advanced, periodontal surgery may be required. Surgery allows the specialist periodontist to access difficult-to-reach areas under the gum and along the roots where calculus and plaque have accumulated. This will help to repair damage caused by the progressive disease. Some commonly prescribed surgeries include pocket reduction, regeneration, crown lengthening, bone or soft tissue graft.
