Professional profile

Dr Barlow has been an established full-time Consultant at West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust since May 2005. During that time in addition to his clinical work he has lead the lung Cancer MDT and undertaken management roles including the Clinical Director for Cancer.

As a clinician he continues his interests in complex airways disease, lung function, respiratory allergy, respiratory failure, lung infections, sleep medicine and lung cancer.

Dr Barlow is the Principle Investigator for the LuCID breath study at Watford. The opportunity to recruit into this important multinational trial offers a real insight into the future of lung cancer screening.

“Improving lung health by utilising new technology and innovative investigative pathways is a key driver for me. It has to be about the patient. How can we resolve the questions in hand in the quickest, most effective and scientifically correct manner whilst always keeping all of the patients’ needs at the core of everything we do? Modern medicine should be fusion of old practices which work [taking a history and properly examining patients], keeping that patient-focus at all times but also integrating new techniques as the speciality evolves.”
