PROFESSIONAL PROFILE

Professor Koepp qualified from the Free University Berlin in 1991, moved to London in 1993 to pursue further training in Neurology and to complete his PhD on “Neuroimaging in Epilepsy” at the Institute of Neurology. For this work, he received the prestigious bi-annual Michael-Prize of the ILAE in 2001.

Professor Koepp was the first German national appointed as Consultant Neurologist at the National Hospital for Neurology in 1999. In 2008, via a Readership in Neurology, he was appointed Professor of Neurology at the UCL Institute of Neurology, currently ranked 1st in global Neuroscience.

Professor Koepp directs a busy clinical practice (overseeing 3000 people annually) in parallel with a research group focused on applying advanced imaging methodology for wide ranging treatment benefit for people with epilepsy and other related neurological disorders.

Professor Koepp has a broad background in neurology, with specific training and expertise in key neurological areas, particularly related to (i) episodic disturbances, like epilepsy, including post-stroke and post-traumatic epilepsy, headaches, dizziness, and (ii) cognitive and neurodegenerative disorders, as shown in his publication track record of >250 peer-reviewed publications.

Currently, Professor Koepp is PI on a programme studying neurodegeneration in epilepsy, and on the first anti-epileptogenesis trial in post-stroke epilepsy.

Not only in his clinical role as a expert neurologist, Professor Koepp tries to play an active role in enabling people with neurological disabilities to live their lives to the fullest. In his spare-time, he trained as a disability ski-instructor and introduced (indoor) skiing to people with epilepsy and other disabilities .(https://www.epilepsysociety.org.uk/news/professor-prescribes-skiing-new-tonic-his-patients-epilepsy-22-12-2017#.W_ZmWTOYTb0).

Professor Koepp has been a vocal advocate for person-centred medicine and was instrumental in translating two German patient-centred modular teaching courses, called MOSES and PEPE originally developed by colleagues from Bielefeld, so leading the groundwork for this course now available in several English-speaking countries.
